SAVANNAH, Ga. –
Savannah College of Art and Design pitcher Bennie Sanchez tossed a five-hit complete-game effort as the Bees took a 6-1 baseball decision over West Liberty University Wednesday (March 10) afternoon at Historic Grayson Stadium.

The Bees, who have won eight of their last nine games, improved to 14-8, while the NCAA Division II Hilltoppers remained winless in eight tries. SCAD returns to action Friday (March 12) with a 2 p.m. doubleheader against Ave Maria University at Chain Field.

West Liberty took a 1-0 lead off Sanchez in the second inning. Derek Nichols led off with a double to center and came around to score on Derek Daugherty’s single down the left field line. From that point, Sanchez (2-0) shut the Hilltoppers down as he only allowed one more batter to reach second base the remainder of the game.

The Bees tied the game in the bottom of the inning as Kyle DeYoung had an RBI single to left center. SCAD took the lead for good at 3-1 an inning later on Patrick Braswell’s two-run homer over the left field wall. It was Braswell’s second home run of the season.

SCAD added two more runs in the fourth as the Bees took advantage of three wild pitches from West Liberty starter Jeff Welsh. SCAD scored its final run on another wild pitch from Welsh.
