SAVANNAH, Ga. –
The win streak reached 10 games for the 23rd-ranked Savannah College of Art and Design softball team as the Bees picked up a 2-1 win in eight innings over Armstrong Atlantic State University and an 8-0 win in six innings over Ohio Valley University Saturday at the 2010 Boombah Smash Hit Tournament at the Paulson Softball Complex.

The Bees improved to 15-5 as they recorded their first-ever win in nine tries with their crosstown-rival. SCAD returns to the diamond Sunday (March 7) with two more games. The Bees will face Ohio Valley again at 4 p.m. followed by a 6 p.m. contest against Franklin College.

AASU took an early 1-0 lead on a first-inning home run by Baillie Temples. SCAD responded with a run in the bottom of the first on Carleigh Shannon's leadoff double and an RBI single by Kristen Curette. It would stay that way as AASU starter Megan Barnwell and SCAD starter Sam White didn’t allow another run and forced the extra inning.

Curette (1-0) pitched a scoreless eighth inning for the Bees. In the bottom of the eighth, a pair of errors by the Pirates led to the win by the Bees, the last by Amber Janus allowing Jessaca Spears to score the winning run. SCAD improved to 1-3 in extra-inning games this season.

In the earlier game against Ohio Valley, SCAD jumped on Fighting Scot starter Raegan Turner for four first-inning runs and never looked back. Curette had a RBI singles and Jaime Voelkel added a run-scoring single before Dominica Jordan closed out the scoring with a two-run single to center.

Kiara Boccia improved to 5-1 as she struck out six to pick up the shutout.

During Saturday’s competition, the Bees also hosted an American Heroes’ Softball Tournament that featured nine area fire, police and EMT teams. The Pooler Fire and Police team won the first-ever double-elimination tournament. In the process $1,900 was raised through gate and t-shirt receipts and was donated to the Pooler Fire and Police Association.
