SCAD restructures athletics programs
 
SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Savannah College of Art and Design announced today that it is restructuring SCAD Athletics and will discontinue men's baseball, women's volleyball and women's softball at the end of the 2011-2012 academic year in order to increase financial aid opportunities for all incoming SCAD students. 
 
“SCAD regularly reviews all programs to ensure the university's resources are aligned with SCAD's mission to prepare talented students for professional, creative careers,” said Phil Alletto, SCAD Vice President for Student Success. “Based on key information gathered during our most recent strategic planning process, we decided to redistribute financial aid tied to certain athletic programs, making it available to a greater number of incoming SCAD students.”
 
Rather than spread less funding evenly over all athletic programs, SCAD will eliminate certain SCAD Athletics programs and maintain the same level of funding for others. To determine which athletic programs would remain, SCAD considered the life-long nature of the sport; the impact, especially in length of season and number of games, on academic performance; and the sport's operating costs and facility requirements.
 
As a result of SCAD Athletics restructuring, more SCAD scholarship awards will be available to all incoming SCAD students.
 
Student-athletes affected by the restructuring will maintain their scholarships while they remain in good academic standing and continue to progress satisfactorily toward graduation.
