John Player begins his second year as the SCAD Esports Overwatch Head Coach.
Leading the varsity Overwatch program, his coaching philosophy emphasizes strategic systems, discipline in roles, and a commitment to a wholistic understanding of the game that enables teams to integrate concepts for consistency under pressure at the highest collegiate level.
Player began his Overwatch coaching career at Champlain College in 2021, helping lead the program to three NECC regional championships, one NECC national championship, and multiple LAN appearances. These sustained competitive successes contributed to Champlain Overwatch’s growth into a fully established varsity program under his leadership.
He later joined St. Lawrence University as the Esports Graduate Assistant Coach, where he helped further develop that institution’s esports program with a focus on competitive culture, player development, and broadcast production through enhanced streaming initiatives.
Player attended Champlain College, receiving a bachelor's degree in Professional Writing. He played on Champlain's Esports team from 2020 until 2021, helping the team win Nationals that year.
