Volleyball Advances To TSC Championship

Miami Gardens, Fla. – A mere matter of 10 points over two regular season matches gave Webber International University the tiebreaker over SCAD. What those 10 points meant was that the Bees would have to win a pair of matches on the first day of The Sun Conference Tournament to advance to the championships game instead of one.

Not only was SCAD able to win its first game, but it also won the rubber match with Webber International. The Bees opened the tournament with a 3-1 (25-11, 19-25, 25-17, 25-12) win over Southeastern. They came back in the afternoon to take down the Warriors 3-0 (25-21, 27-25, 25-20).

SCAD improved its overall record to 19-7. The pair of victories set up a 2 p.m. match up Saturday against Embry-Riddle in the championship bout. The fifth-ranked Eagles defeated SCAD 3-0 earlier in the year.

SCAD had a pair of players reach double-digit kills in the opener, led by 13 from Olympia Haney who also hit .455 with five blocks. Junior Jen Drouin had a double-double with 10 kills and 12 digs.

The Bees had a decided defensive advantage with a 59-43 margin in digs and 13-5 in blocks. Junior Chelsey Corgan had a game-high 15 digs while freshman Eileen Hogan added 11.

After dropping the second set to Southeastern, the Bees were down 6-5 in the third before going on a 9-2 run to take the wind out of the Fire's sails. The fourth set was tied 5-5 before sophomore Pammy Craigle, who had a match-high 23 assists, served six-straight points to flip the match in SCAD's favor.

Freshman Lauran Eschenroeder – who was named TSC Newcomer of the Year on Thursday – led the Bees against Webber with 10 kills, five blocks and a .333 hitting percentage.  SCAD had a total team effort on offense with five players recording five or more kills.

Defensively, the Bees were led by Corgan's 23 digs and a dozen more from Drouin. Haney had six blocks and eight kills. SCAD's defense helped them to a .150-to-049 advantage in hitting percentage.

The Bees were down 18-17 in the opening set before Hogan served four-straight points to take a 22-18 lead. The Warriors pulled to within 22-21 before two Drouin kills and a WIU error gave SCAD the set, 25-21. The second set was nip and tuck the entire way. Tied at 24-24, the Bees got two kills from Eschenroeder and yet another Warrior error on set point for the 27-25 victory. Down 19-17 in the third, the Bees went on a 6-0 run off Drouin's serve to capture the lead, 23-19. Back-to-back kills by freshmen Eschenroeder and Anna McGee sealed the victory.
